Corey Walker sentenced to 29 years for Pop Smoke’s killing
Corey Walker, the last individual convicted in connection with the tragic 2020 murder of Pop Smoke, expressed deep remorse during his sentencing in Los Angeles on Friday.
The 24-year-old received a 29-year prison sentence after accepting a plea deal on February 5. Walker pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and two counts of robbery linked to the death of Pop Smoke.
Despite the absence of Pop Smoke’s family in court, Walker delivered a apology, acknowledging that no words could undo his actions. “Even though the Jackson family isn’t here in court today, I would like to sincerely apologize for my unforgivable actions,” he stated, as reported by Rolling Stone.
Walker also expressed sorrow for the pain he caused his own family and community. “I also want to apologize to my family for the pain and embarrassment they have endured over the last five years,” he added.
Originally facing a murder charge and a potential life sentence without parole, Walker managed to avoid the harsher punishment by taking the plea deal. He expressed gratitude to his defense team for securing the agreement. “Today, I take responsibility for my dreadful partake in these crimes,” he admitted. “As I begin my road to rehabilitation, I assure you that I will steer clear of negative behavior.”
Pop Smoke, born Bashar Barakah Jackson, was tragically killed during a home invasion in February 2020 while staying at a rented Hollywood Hills residence. The assailants, led by Walker, broke in after the 20-year-old rapper unintentionally revealed his address on Instagram. They shot him multiple times and stole valuables, including a Rolex watch. Walker was the only adult charged in the case, while three juveniles involved reached separate plea deals.
Pop Smoke’s death was a devastating loss to the music world. His unique voice and sound helped redefine the Brooklyn drill scene, and his legacy continues to inspire fans and artists worldwide. Rest in peace, Woo.
